Marvel’s Daredevil is an American television series. The story follows the character of Matt Murdock, who was blinded as a young boy and left with secretly heightened senses. He works as a lawyer by day, and by night he uses his super senses to fight crime on the streets of New York City as a vigilante called Daredevil. Accuracy of Interpreting Shown:

• Interpreting to Meet the Needs of the Employer
  The interpreter in all the above scenes is in the direct employment of Wilson Fisk, and as such their interpreting is selective and summarised to suit the information that needs to be relayed to his employer. The interpreter uses “he”/”she” to explain what each delegate is saying, rather than interpreting the exact words and phrases spoken by each. This is quite common for interpreters in permanent employment for one person, as they will learn what information their employer is looking for and will know in advance the aims that their employer would like to achieve.

• Delegates Understanding the Other Languages
  As seen in many real world scenarios, some delegates are shown to understand more than one language, but still have James Wesley deliver interpretation. This is shown to be a show of power (not showing weakness by speaking in a language they are not fluent in), and also to strategically hide skills and knowledge from others (not revealing their language skills could mean they can catch the others off-guard or learn valuable information in the future). 

 

Interpreting Challenges:

• Criminal Environment / Lack of Legal or Professional Standards
  James Wesley is shown to soften the words of some delegates in some instances, so that all speech that he interprets to his employer is polite. This can happen sometimes in real-world interpreting scenarios, but it is seen to be all the more vital in this television series as the main employer, Wilson Fisk, is shown to kill some of his business partners when he is angry. Keeping all delegates calm and level-headed is seen to be advantageous for the business relationships amongst the criminal underworld bosses.
